Classic Homemade Waffles
These traditional waffles use everyday ingredients and work well with sweet or savory toppings. Serve them immediately for the best texture.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 3/4 cups milk
- 1/2 cup melted butter or neutral cooking oil
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Method
- Preheat the waffle iron according to its instructions.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Stir just until combined; a few small lumps are fine.
- Lightly grease the waffle iron if needed. Add enough batter to cover the cooking surface without overfilling it.
- Cook until the waffle is golden and releases easily. Repeat with the remaining batter.
- Serve warm with your preferred toppings.
Serving Ideas
- Butter and maple syrup
- Fresh berries and whipped cream
- Sliced bananas and toasted nuts
- Powdered sugar and fruit preserves
- Fried chicken or eggs for a savory meal
Helpful Tips
- Avoid overmixing, which can make waffles dense.
- Place finished waffles directly on a wire rack to preserve their crisp exterior.
- To keep several waffles warm, arrange them in a single layer in a low oven.
- Cool leftovers completely before refrigerating or freezing. Reheat them in a toaster or oven to restore crispness.
